At R.R. Moton, Magnet students receive their music lessons every other day for a two-hour block. Students are instructed
by two artist teachers and are immersed in four different areas. They will all receive vocal training, play recorders, string instruments, and
keyboard, all in our spacious, state-of-the-art facilities. Instrument rental is available and free to all students who are enrolled in the program.
Our students attend numerous field trips
to see professional and youth oriented performances around the community,
such as the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra, the Florida Grand Opera,
and the Harlem Boys Choir. In addition, they will also be involved
in a number of performances throughout the year featuring them as
young developing musicians. We have had students accepted into the
Florida All-State Elementary School Chorus, Superintendent Honor's
Keyboard Orchestra, String Orchestra, and Chorus. They have competed
and earned First Place Awards in the DCYF Vocal Solo & Ensemble
Competitions. Each year the students are also invited to travel
outside Dade County to perform in National Music Festivals. They
have earned Straight Superior Ratings in Orlando and New York City.
These Trips are very unique and a wonderful enhancement to learning!
To audition students must prepare a short
memorized musical piece to sing or play on an instrument. Previous
experience on instruments is not required. They will also take a
written listening test and participate in some vocal & rhythmic
imitation games. During the audition the instructors will look for
the student's ability to match pitch & rhythms, to follow directions,
and the interest and motivation to learn more about the exciting
world of music!
