The History of Robert Russa Moton Elementary

Nineteen miles south of Miami is the town of Perrine, in which Robert Russa Moton Elementary School is located.

In 1912, there were few houses, families, and children.  The community was without a school or church.  After several churches were organized, the ministers tried immediately to establish a school.

In September 1913, Rev. S. H. White ran a big successful revival at the Richmond Air Base, and established the first church, which later moved to Perrine.  During this time, the children were taught their A, B, C's and numbers as well as how to read at Sunday School.

The necessity of a school was so pressing that Miss Mamie Acrum started a private school in 1915.  A "year later she left, and Miss Annie Bostflald opened a school at Cutler Ridge.  This school was more than four miles from Perrine, but the children walked.  This, school closed in 1917, and Miss Glenda Cash opened a private school in Goulds.   Here the children walked and attended regularly.  This school remained open until 1921.

In 1921, the Rev. W. H. Maddox, the A.M.E. Church minister, met with the School Board in the interest of getting a school in Perrine.  Mr. Filer, Chairman of the Board, told Rev. White to find a teacher.  Miss Mary Murphy of Goulds became the first teacher.  School was held in the church..  Because of her very small salary, Mr. Dan Rolle provided free room and board for her in his home for two years.  Following Miss Murphy were:  Rev. M. M. Lindsy, and Prof. Hunter.

During the early 1940's land was purchased for the school site.  Five portable buildings were built and additional teachers were hired, thus beginning the first permanent public school for Black children in Perrine.

Since that time, the following persons have served as principals:
Professor Turner, Professor Johnson, Franklin Stirrup, Mrs. Smith, Leo Jenkins, Mrs. Roberta Chayter, Mrs. Elizabeth Espy, Mrs. Linnie W. Fannin, Mrs. Zola J. Sullivan, Mrs. Andel W. Micklins, Mrs. Maedon S. Bullard, Dr. Bernard J. Penington, Dr. Rasamma Nyberg, Mrs. Yvonne Hinson, Mr. Jimmie L. Brown, and currently  Mrs Rosbin Ivery
